$60,000 sent to Nigeria

WHETHER as a result of scams or not, Warwick residents sent $15,000 to Nigeria last month; in Stanthorpe the total was $45,000.

A stunned audience at Wednesday's Lock It or Lose It expo was told of all economic loss, fraud represented 40%, yet only 1%-4% was reported.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay, who presented the stark figures when he addressed the gathering, told of the difficulties police had in tracking down offenders.

"They are doing what law enforcement is yet to do - it's trans-national and they co-operate with one another," he said.

"The frightening thing is they are now selling their knowledge."

He urged all people to report any contact they had had with scam artists.

"If someone comes along with the right words and story, we will fall for it because we are humans, we have emotions," he said.

DNA security solutions and Snr Sgt Stewart Day also spoke about how to stay alert against crime. If you have been the victim of a scam, report it to Warwick Police on 46604444.
