$60b gas deal to boost jobs

THE largest liquefied natural gas deal in history will bring $14 billion and almost 5000 jobs to the Darling Downs over the next decade.

The contract, signed in China yesterday, will see 72 million tonnes of LNG from Queensland supplied to China from 2014, creating 4900 jobs on the gas fields of Chinchilla and Miles.

The $60 billion deal eclipses Australia’s previous largest LNG contract for 82.5 million tonnes over 25 years between the North West Shelf Project and CNOOC.

Premier Anna Bligh said the BG Group and China National Offshore Oil Corporation deal would pump more than $1.2 billion a year into the Darling Downs economy for more than 10 years.

“In addition, up to 880 people will work on construction of the gas pipeline to Gladstone and most of these workers will be already living in Miles, Dalby, Chinchilla and Gladstone,” she said.

Member for Toowoomba North Kerry Shine said as a regional centre Toowoomba had much to gain from the deal.

“Businesses will benefit by supplying goods and services and there will be increased spending by workers,” Mr Shine said.

“I note that QGC has committed to build housing to reduce stress on local housing stocks.”

During construction of the Gladstone plant, gas fields in Chinchilla and Miles and 540km pipeline, the project will have a peak work force of 8500.
