Automotive owner to keep selling
GRAEME Collins Automotive owner David Cassels, who has been advertising his vehicles at the Warwick Saleyards on sale days, says he will fight to continue to do so.
At the corporate services committee meeting last month Southern Downs Regional councillors voted not to endorse a Warwick Saleyards Advisory Committee recommendation to call for expressions of interest from car dealers to advertise vehicles on sale days. However at the general meeting in Stanthorpe on Tuesday they formalised the recommendation and conduct an investigation into what would be required.
Mr Cassels does not understand why the area is an in-appropriate venue for him or another dealer to advertise their vehicles.
“It’s a buying and selling environment, it’s an appropriate place to have the vehicles,” he said.
“I don’t understand why council needs to get involved ... they should just butt out. I’m happy to pay for the space.”
Mr Cassels said each Tuesday morning for the past year he had advertised three commercial vehicles at the saleyards.
“We took down three utes and a couple of flags and that was it; the guys from out of town really appreciated it,” he said.
While the discussion has been taking place in the council chambers, he said he had still not received any correspondence telling him to stop advertising the vehicles on sale days.
“I’m going to try and keep going down there,” he said.
“It’s time all councillors got into an independent forum and told the local business community what their attitude to doing business and employing people in Warwick is. The saleyards is a place of commerce already, and rural motor vehicles are a logical partner for livestock raising and selling,” Mr Cassels said.
“If a car dealer wants to be innovative and develop a new marketing method, good on him.”
At the general meeting, Mayor Ron Bellingham declared a perceived interest in the topic and left the meeting and Deputy Mayor Peter Blundell was appointed acting-mayor for the discussion.
Cr Ross Bartley was supportive of the idea and did not see a problem with having cars advertised at the saleyards on sale days.
He went on to say most cars carried advertisements in the form of stickers attached to the back of the vehicles which state where the car was sold from, and there wasn’t a problem in that.
The question of liability was raised by Cr Mally McMurtrie who asked who would be responsible if a car was damaged.
Corporate services director Andy Ireland said it would be council’s liability if someone tripped and hurt themselves, as it would be on council’s land; but as for damage of the car, it would have to come under the car dealerships insurance policy.
Cr Cameron Gow said it was important to liaise with the Warwick Saleyards.
“We don’t want to make assumptions with what’s involved,” he said.
Cr Blundell recommended council formalise point three, with an investigation over what would be required. The move was carried.
Warwick Chamber of Commerce president John Randall said yesterday the chamber supported any diversified business opportunities at the Warwick Saleyards.
“When the right opportunity presents itself, it’s always a good business decision to go with it,” he said.
“Our saleyards attract hundreds of people weekly from all over south-west Queensland, and it is appropriate that Warwick businesses can access this market if the right processes are applied.”
