Fear of rain didn't dampen thrilling Clifton Show

CLIFTON Show Society president Haydn O'Leary was thrilled with the event's turnout despite fears of a wet weekend.

"I would say we have the same amount of people as last year, but we have come a long way from what we were," said the 23-year-old civil engineer.

Serving in the position for the past three years, community conscious Mr O'Leary has set out to change the face of the Clifton Show, in a quest to draw larger crowds.

With new events added annually the show caters to every rural niche imaginable, ranging from ute musters to the famous fruit cake competition, one of Mr O'Leary's favourite events.

"The fruit cake competition makes the show what it is, but I like any event with horses," he said.

Bitten on the leg in last year's mule riding event, Mr O'Leary was "not convinced" to join in the festivities, preferring to take a back seat.

"I'm just happy to sit back and watch everyone else have a go at what's on," he said, instead enjoying "the occasional free ice-cream" - apparently one of his presidential perks.

Mr O'Leary isn't the only 20-something behind the success of this year's Clifton Show.

2014 Showgirl Francis Hayden was also deeply involved in the lead-up to the event.

Exhibiting cattle from a young age, Ms Hayden was responsible for fundraising $3000 for the local show society.

"I organised a Melbourne Cup event as my biggest fundraiser," she said.

"I feel like all the work has paid off now."

The 22-year-old was looking forward to relaxing with the other entrants at the end of the show.
