Fun run to raise money for suicide prevention

THIS Sunday, take the chance to get out and enjoy the spring weather all for a good cause.

Warwick Suicide Prevention Group is holding a 5km family fun run (or 2.5km walk) in support of a safer community.

WSPG director Johno Felton said the fun run/walk would be held just past the skate bowl, next to the river.

"Come along for a bit of fitness, bring the deck chairs and the eskies," he said.

"There will be a coffee truck, a Lions sausage sizzle and an ice creams.

"It should be a fun day to go out in the community."

Events will start about 8.45am, when runners will complete the first lap around the river circuit.

They will be followed by those who choose to walk, such as parents with prams.

Lastly, dogs on leads and their owners will head out on the track.

Entertainment will be provided on the council stage from 9.30am, and will feature acts such as the Aboriginal Choir and the Warwick City Band, as well as local talent Jodie Ellis, Erin and Keely Hilton, Emma Siebenhausen, Dominic Stradwick and Oliver Howson.

Lure coursing will also be happening, as well as dog obedience demonstrations.

Mr Felton said the Family Fun Run/Walk was important because Warwick was losing people in the drug scene.

"It's important to raise awareness because a main factor with suicide is financial pressures and drugs," he said.

"We're trying to nip drugs in the bud and make Warwick a safer community.

"You've only got to read the paper and see the amount of people going through the courts."

Mr Felton believes that schools should tackle the issue of drugs head-on.

"Drug education in schools is virtually non-existent; it needs to start at Grade 6 and that's the reality," he said.

"A lot of people are shocked at that, but its true.

"We need hard-hitting campaigns with drugs like we do for smoking.

"It affects everyone, not just the dealer and the user... they target the community to steal money for the drugs."

Participants can register at the van on-site from 8am, with the fun run finishing up about 1.30pm.

Cost is $5 per adult and a gold coin donation for children. Dogs are free.
