LNP rakes in $73m in donations during election year

THE Liberal Party raked in more than $70 million in revenue last financial year, dwarfing the $54 million the Labor Party raised during the election year.

Political donation returns were released by the Australian Electoral Commission on Monday, showing some details on who gave the parties money during 2012-13.

The Liberal Party had $73,120,903 in receipts, Labor $54,777,408, The Nationals $8,276,188 and The Greens $8,132,270, although not all funds were necessarily "donations".

While there is a lack of clarity around "donations" and "other receipts" in the reports, again big business across all sectors were the main groups lining the political coffers.

Chief among them was Kerry Packer's wife Roslyn, who gave the Liberal Party a whopping $580,000 donation, followed by other business figures Harold Mitchell, with just over $17,000 for the party and Qantas chairman Leigh Clifford with $15,000.

Other big donors to Queensland's Liberal National Party included the Australian Hotels Association, with $372,500, and tobacco company Philip Morris, with $107,000.

The hotels industry was also generous with Labor, with the AHA donating $150,000 to the party, and chicken company Ingham's Enterprises pitching in $250,000.

Across the board, more than $153 million was recorded in "receipts" by all political parties, and a massive $787,170,734 through "associated entities".

Those entities largely including unions, politically aligned think tanks, and private companies which help raise funds for the major parties and protect many donors from publicity.

While the figures show the contributions to June 30 last year, it does not take into account direct election donations as such, and the public will have to wait until next year to find out about donations made between July 1 and the federal election last year.
