Nathan Dionysius win harks back to Grantham loss

AFTER losing everything he owned in the 2011 Grantham Flood, Nathan Dionysius received a sporting scholarship for coaching under Warwick professional Rob McConnell.

Now three years and two months later, Nathan has won the Warwick Golf Club A-grade championship.

"I like going to Warwick and playing, it is a really friendly club and my golf is improving all the time in Warwick," he said.

The Dionysius family at Grantham lost everything in the floods, including all their sporting equipment, when the deluge from Lockyer Creek hit their farm and home.

During the recovery phase, the Breaking Out Group offered a scholarship to a flood-hit Grantham student and Dionysius was selected.

He had previously been coached in Warwick by McConnell but the $1500 enabled the family to pay for travel and lessons in Warwick for Nathan to re-start his sporting career.

"It would have taken me a lot longer to get going if it wasn't for the support from the Breaking Out Group," he said.

"I had six months off and Rob helped me get my swing back. He really encourages me and tried to help me a lot with all the little things that matter in golf."

While he only had six months off, Nathan believes the flood and aftermath put his dreams back a year or two. His handicap increased from 10 to 12 or 13 after the flood but he has now reduced it to five.

His mother Junelle said her three sons were uncomfortably living in the house hit with flood waters and the family moved to another property at Flagstone Creek but still grew vegetables on the farm at Grantham.

"The people at Warwick have been fantastic to Nathan," she said.

Winning the Warwick club championship is a career high for Nathan.

"I play pennants for Warwick where my best performance was a seven and six win against a player from Borneo Barracks," he said.

"I am really keen to be part of a winning pennants team from Warwick.

"My aim is to drop my handicap to zero and try to aim to become a professional."

He receives coaching under McConnell once a fortnight before a competition.
