Norma O’Hara Murphy makes Australian Bush Laureate Awards

BONY Mountain country music legend Norma O'Hara Murphy is gearing up for yet another awards ceremony in Tamworth.

The singer-songwriter has been nominated as a finalist in the Australian Bush Laureate Awards lyrics category, with the awards to be presented in the Country Music Capital on January 21.

This is O'Hara Murphy's first Australian Bush Laureate nomination, with the song 'Gilbert, O'Malley and Hall' from an album of songs about Canowindra.

"I thought why not? - I'll throw my hat in the ring," she said.

"It's an interesting song - I wrote it a few years ago."

The song was inspired by a tale about three bushrangers who stopped over for a night in the town of Canowindra.

"I've always been a nut for bushrangers and our early history," O'Hara Murphy said.

"It's a great yarn and it inspired me to write what I consider to be a good song."

O'Hara Murphy has a career spanning more than 30 years, winning five Golden Guitars and numerous other awards in that time.

"It's always great being recognised by my peers in the industry," she said.

"I really appreciate being appreciated and recognised for what I do."

The self-proclaimed "old-trooper" said she's seen and heard it all in her time in the industry.

"I'm still writing songs - I've still got the old fire in me," she said.

"I also run the Bony Mountain Music Festival which will be held from September 19-21."

The Australian Bush Laureate Awards ceremony will begin at 2pm tomorrow at the Tamworth Town Hall, featuring a performance by the Australian Country Music Hall of Fame inducted artist.

Country music fans can listen to O'Hara Murphy by tuning into Rainbow FM (89.3 FM) from 9am to noon today for her weekly Celtic-country music program.
