Pair admits to drunken stealing spree
AFTER they were nabbed during a drunken stealing spree just before Christmas, a Warwick couple continued their unruly behaviour at the watchhouse committing self-harm and assault on police.
Like most locals, Christopher Wayne Scott and Tanya Maree Conwell, both 45, hit Rose City Shoppingworld the week before Christmas to pick up some last-minute items.
But the pair thought they could take their items without paying. As they made their way through the centre, Scott and Conwell filled their trolley with an unusual array of items including a dozen Junabee Farm eggs, a handbag, a backpack, a fan and a kids' cupcake baking set.
The Warwick Magistrates Court this week heard the drunken pair were outside the centre and were arrested and taken back to the watchhouse. Police prosecutor Ken Wiggan told the court that while in the cells, Scott used pieces of a smashed plastic coffee cup to cut his neck, face and arm.
Police were forced to taser him when he refused to lay down so they could assist with his injuries.
Conwell was no more the model inmate.
She yelled into the intercom to the station and demanded a cigarette before wrapping a sheet around her neck and flinging herself against the walls.
When officers became concerned about her wellbeing, they moved her to a padded cell but Conwell resisted furiously.
The 45-year-old kicked and punched two female officers, one of whom had just returned to work after breaking her ankle. Scott, who appeared in court via video link from jail, was on parole for unlawful use of a motor vehicle and traffic offences at the time of the latest crime.
Scott pleaded guilty to four stealing charges and one charge of obstructing police while Conwell pleaded guilty to four stealing charges and one of assaulting police.
Scott had been in custody since his arrest on December 16 and was yesterday sentenced to three months jail.
Conwell was sentenced to 12 months probation and 40 hours of community service.
