Ray Hadley to broadcast Border Rugby League Round Robin
LEGENDARY commentator Ray Hadley expects to see players as tough as any in the game when he broadcasts from the Border Rugby League Round Robin on March 22 at Charlie Andrews Oval, Killarney.
Hadley told the Daily News yesterday that while the player skills were not up to the same level as in the NRL, he expected the games to be as tough as any.
"Some of the toughest footballers are in the country," Hadley said. "They have great endurance and many travel 300 to 400 kilometres to games."
Hadley and the Continuous Call Team from 2GB were invited to Killarney by Wickham Freight Lines and will broadcast their program from the back of a Wickham's trailer from noon to 5pm.
The visit also coincides with the 90th anniversary of the Killarney QCWA.
"They supply the semi
trailers and it will be good to pay them back for their loyal support," Hadley said. "We get a new trailer each year so there are five or six travelling around the country with Wickham Freight Lines.
"The trailers help promote us and we have another one in which we cart our gear."
Hadley said he was delighted to be heading to Killarney due to its league history.
"Rohan Hancock was a great player and I have also watched his daughter Stephanie play."
Rohan was a State of Origin original for Queensland and a Kangaroo tourist, while daughter Stephanie won a women's World Cup last year.
Killarney will join Cargo in New South Wales and Tara in Queensland as one of the three smallest places the Continuous Call Team have visited.
There will be a football component to the five hours of radio at Killarney, including score updates from the round robin, which will feature all five current teams in the Border competition.
Hadley will be accompanied to Killarney by former Kangaroos player and coach Bob "Bozo" Fulton and television personalities and retired top players Darryl Brohman and Steve "Blocka" Roach.
"A lot of the older fans want to talk to Bozo," Hadley said. "He is one of the Immortals. The younger ones want to talk to the guys on TV."
Cutters committee member John Towells said the day would include junior games, markets, a women's league tag demonstration game and the round robin.
"I have already had a phone call from a family at the Sunshine Coast who want to camp in town as they want to meet Ray," he said.
