Second range crossing largest road project in Aus: Truss

THE $1.6 billion Toowoomba Second Range Crossing has been described as "probably the largest single road project in regional Australia" by Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss.

Also the Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister, Mr Truss was speaking at the Infrastructure Partnerships Australia(correct) conference in Melbourne on Friday.

Mr Truss also touched on the upgrading the Warrego Hwy, west of Toowoomba, and the Gateway Motorway widening in Queensland, while he gave a rundown on some important projects nationwide.

"At $6.7 billion, fixing the Bruce Highway is the largest financial commitment of our $50 billion investment," he said.

"Our plans include more than 60 separate projects, making it also one of the largest construction endeavours underway."

He announced councils across Australia will all have to vie for $350 million in extra funding for the Federal Government's Road 2 Recovery program next year.

Mr Truss said it would bring the total funding for the program to $2.1 billion over the 2014-2015 to 2018-2019 period. - APN NEWSDESK
