Country beats City

FOR the second year in succession, the South West Country side beat a team from the Toowoomba competition in a rugby league game.

The combined country side from Border and Roma competitions scored a 24-14 win against a second-string Toowoomba representative side.

Last season, South West Country beat a Toowoomba number one side for the first time since the Border competition started 14 years ago.

Border players scored all the points after going into the game with more players than Roma.

Country and Killarney hooker Jamie Watts scored two tries, Brad Crisp (Stanthorpe) and Luke Wolfe (Inglewood) scored a try each and Chris Johnstone (Tenterfield) landed four goals.

Matt McCarthy (Wattles), Luke Wright and Matthew Evans scored tries for Toowoomba and Ben Lockley kicked the goal.

Killarney president John Towells was one of the helpers for the country side and was delighted with the performance.

“It was a tough encounter with three players, two from Toowoomba and one from country,” Towells said.

“They had a reasonable crowd at the match at Inglewood.”

The Border draw has been changed with Killarney hosting Inglewood at Charlie Andrews Oval on Saturday.
