Up to 1000 bidders will raise their hand at Allora's auction
ALLORA Show Society secretary Kellie Jones is anticipating another huge Allora Annual Auction at the Allora Showgrounds this Monday of the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
Inquiries regarding the booking of lots for the auction, reported to be the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, should be directed to Allora Show Society president Shirley Cornhill on 0427 100 210.
Volunteers assist in the operation of the auction on behalf of nominated community groups, resulting in funds from the auction being shared among the participating groups.
"The rosters of volunteers are coming together nicely," according to Kellie, "but we're always looking for more people who can spare some time".
Anyone can volunteer, for more details just ring Kellie on 0403 619 118.
Since its beginning as a White Elephant Sale organised by the former Allora Apex Club to raise funds for the Allora community, the auction has evolved into a sale of massive proportions.
In 2008 the few remaining Apexians handed the reins over to the Allora Show Society, guiding them all the way.
Items are sold on commission if not donated and the profits are shared between the show society and all the organisations volunteering their services throughout the weekend.
Last year 27 local organisations received funds.
About 200 volunteers assist over the three days of the long weekend. The showground is amassed with items for sale on Saturday and Sunday, ready for auction on Monday.
Numerous auctioneers, working three at a time, share their workload throughout the day which begins at 8am sharp.
Up to 1000 bidders try their luck to snare the bargains.
The iconic local event has reached such a level of popularity that Channel Seven had a film crew from "The Great South East" in attendance in 2010.
It is a great day out for all so come and join us on Queen's Birthday Monday, bring your wallets, sample the delicious food, and bag a bargain.
This year lots on offer include a wide range of antiques including carbide lights, watches and clocks, furniture, a monkey tail pump, German wagon and much more; general furniture; bric-a-brac; tools; fencing and building materials; workshop equipment; ag machinery including a twin row Underhung potato planter and so much more. All up there will be around 2000 lots for bidders to consider.
A canteen will operate throughout, and there will be market stalls on site.
Vendors are required to bring items to the showgrounds between 8am to 5pm tomorrow and 8am to 4pm Sunday.
