A brave young girl takes a big step after tragedy
WE TAKE a look back at what made headlines in the Warwick Daily News on February 2, 2006.
Her story captured the hearts of the country, as did her sheer determination and courage, and a young fighter took another big step.
Sophie Delezio, who suffered horrendous injuries in 2003 after a car crashed into her child care centre, stepped into the classroom for her first day of primary school.
The moment was a special one for the young girl, who lost both feet, some fingers and third-degree burns in the incident in 2003.
Lorin Nicholson made the big move from Tamworth to Warwick in 2003, and reporter Madeleine Logan caught up with the acclaimed country guitarist.
"I left a lot of friends behind in Tamworth and I was lost for a few months,” he said. "But the Warwick people are so accepting and hospitable that it didn't take long for me to make new friends.”
Mr Nicholson geared up for a big venture on the road in 2006, where he was expected to spend eight months on the road, following on from visiting 400 schools the previous year.
"As soon as I drive in (to Warwick) I can feel myself let go.”
Warwick experienced a lean month of rainfall in January 2006, with just over half of the average rainfall gracing the Rose City.
"Warwick had only 43.8mm of rain compared to the long-term average of 82.2mm for January,” BOM climatologist Ann Farrell said. "It was basically only some of the coastal regions that picked up average to above-average rain.”
Temperatures were on the rise for Warwick, with the thermometer averaging one degree higher than average.
Australian under-21 netball representative Laura Geitz and administrator Peter Cavanagh gave Allora an impressive haul at the Warwick Shire Australia Day awards, reported Glyn Rees. Geitz took home the Sports Award, while Cavanagh walked home with the Sports Administrator Award during the ceremoney.
Bruce Ole may have earned his cash as a linseman with Ergon Energy, but his line and length is what nabbed him player of the week honours.
In his time with the RSL Diggers since coming to Warwick, Ole produced a top score of 48 runs with the bat, and 6-21 with ball in hand.
