A DAY IN THE LIFE: Ross Cameron

THE classic matte black 1960 Chrysler Windsor once seemed destined to rust away in a pile of old cars in the San FernandoValley in California, before it found its way to Australia, and eventually into Ross Cameron's shed.

Mr Cameron, also known to many as Shanno's Dad, is the groundsman at Warwick West State School, a role he calls much more than just a job.

"I absolutely love it,” he said.

"The kids are wonderful, the staff is great and now my little grandson is there as well.”

When he's not prettying up the gardens and fixing whatever needs to be fixed around the school, Mr Cameron, a qualified mechanic, can often be found working away on his first love, cars.

"This Chrysler has quite a story,” he said.

"A guy in America found it by looking around on Google Earth.

"The original photo is just a satellite photo of a junkyard of old cars in an old motel yard.

"It'd been parked up there for 29 years.”

Mr Cameron said the car was then beautified and modified by JMC Performance in the US.

"They were the company that made the cars for the Stephen King movie Christine,” he said.

"And in a quirky twist, this car even has a bit of unsettling history itself. It first came to Australia in 2013, bought by a surfer from Coolum Beach, but he died shortly after in a surfing accident.

"Then it went to another guy, who had to move back to New Zealand after his son developed cancer.

"Then it's come to me, but we're all good so far.”

The car is a crowd-pleaser at the annual Jumpers and Jazz grand automobile display.

Also in the shed is a 1948 Commer pick-up, which Mr Cameron likes to get on the road at least once a week.
