A day’s play is quite okay for polocrosse club
"IT'S rained... who cares" was the sentiment as the Cunningham Polocrosse Club pondered whether to cancel the weekend carnival after one day of play.
Club secretary Robyn Cooper said after 35mm of rain on Saturday night, the second day of the carnival was cancelled.
"The rain was on top of 35mm of water irrigated on the grounds before the start of the carnival," Cooper said.
"We probably could have played after 10am Sunday but players said it had rained and who cares."
After the forecast of rain, most of the players were happy with one day of play.
There were 31 teams in the carnival on a weekend where the Cunningham club worked hard to attract women's players.
"Lauren Cant and the Waugh sisters, Ella and Ryle, were three of the Cunningham women who stood out with their play at the carnival," Cooper said.
The carnival dinner on Saturday night included an auction to assist Tansey club member Alex Rowe who is receiving treatment at a cost of $9000 a month for leukemia.
A photo frame with a photo of the buyer's choice donated by Joe McInally, a polocrosse photographer, was bought for $1050 by Tansey player Byron Davison.
McInally will be framing an action photo from this season chosen by Davison.
Alex and husband Terrance live at Biddeston, west of Toowoomba, and have been involved with the Tansey club for the past five years.
"Alex has had leukemia for four years and the prognosis at the start of this year was not good," Terrance said.
"We were asked if we would pay for gene therapy pills and said 'yes'. As far as we understand, Alex is the first person to receive this treatment for leukemia. It has been used for other illnesses.
"Her blood tests since she started the treatment are good and the doctors are excited about the success of the pills so far."
He said they were very grateful for the support they had received.
Alex faced a separate health issue this week which required bowel surgery at Greenslopes Hospital and time in intensive care.
She is now recovering well from the operation and ready for the second month of the new treatment.
There will be a fundraising auction in conjunction with the Warwick polocrosse carnival this weekend.
