COMMENT: Drivers be wary when stopped by unmarked police
A FRIGHTENING experience for one Warwick motorist on his way to work yesterday has highlighted need for people to be vigilant when stopped by unmarked police cars.
The man was stopped on the New England Hwy at Braeside by what he thought was an policeman.
Fortunately he watched the "officer" closely and when he noticed strange behaviour, followed his instincts and fled the scene.
The man and his family were last night grateful the incident did not end in a more serious manner and the man was able to escape what could have been a very dangerous situation.
It is unclear at this stage what the motives behind this were - whether there were plans to take the car, injure the man or simply a thrill-seeking incident - but it is concerning nonetheless.
It's not too often we hear of people impersonating police in Warwick.
The only one I can recall is the case of two young Warwick men who stopped a car with their fake police lights.
Although in this case the men did not stop their vehicle or approach the driver.
Warwick police officer-in-charge Jamie Deacon has reminded motorists that they must comply with a direction to pull over by an unmarked police car.
If you notice anything suspicious - or simply want to make sure - please ask the officer to produce identification and/or call your local police station for verification.
