A grave outing for keen walkers

ST GEORGE Richard Gore was no stranger top the spotlight during his life, which spanned from 1812 to 1871.

The focus will be on him again today, with an organised walk through the Warwick Cemetery.

Warwick Visitor Information Centre volunteers Fran Hockings and Betty Wells will lead the tour, which will be held as part of A Heritage Experience - a five-day program of events organised through Warwick Tourism and Events.

According to the Australian Dictionary of Biography, Mr Gore was "elected to the Legislative Assembly without opposition on 20 May 1860".

According to the same publication, he later purchased Lyndhurst Stud, where he resided until his death.

"The cemetery's been here for more than 150 years," Mrs Hockings said.

"We've picked the tombstones of settlers, a footballer and even an ex-convict, as well as early members of parliament such as Mr Gore.

"The Morgan's and the McDougall's are two names that will resonate with a lot of locals - of course McDougall and Sons are still going very strong."

Mrs Hockings said it was the first cemetery walk that had taken place this century, as far as she was aware.

"When you drive past, you might look at the cemetery but you don't tend to think of what's here," she said.

"We want people to experience the history of the region, because there is a lot of history contained in this cemetery.

"There are people in here who have had streets named after them, people who fought in wars and more."

Warwick Tourism and Events co-ordinator Rob Hamilton said it was good to remember those who had a profound impact.

"I would like to think that people will get a greater sense of national pride by doing the walk," Mr Hamilton said.

The meeting place is the shelter in the middle of the cemetery.

The walk:

  • Held at Warwick Cemetery, off Wentworth St
  • From 10am to 11.30am today and Saturday
  • Cost is free
