Growing tradition puts fun into fear for our kids
FRIGHT night comes to the Rose City this weekend, with Warwick set to host its first big Halloween event.
The Warwick Showground will be turned into a haunted playground tomorrow for the Video Ezy Night of Horrors.
Little freaks, ghosts and ghouls can wander through mazes and indulge in jumping castle fun, while adults are also catered for with a horror movie screening later that night.
Halloween - once a tenuous event that passed us Warwick people by without much of a fuss - has become one of the most popular days on the calendar.
I admit I was once something of a Halloween grinch, who resented what I decided was another attempt by us Aussies to replicate the American life we saw on our screens.
But then I watched the excitement and euphoria running through my kids as they pulled on their scariest costumes, rallied their friends and celebrated Halloween.
And it made me wonder how anything that encourages kids to be kids can be that bad.
In an era where technology is pushing children to grow up immediately and childhoods are becoming frighteningly short, we should be relishing any chance for our children to just enjoy being children.
Head along to the Night of Horrors and embrace being young.
