Tributes flow for retiring MP, as race to replace begins

SOUTHERN Downs MP Lawrence Springborg has again ruled out shifting to federal politics in the wake of Maranoa MP Bruce Scott's decision to retire.

Mr Scott, who officially announced his retirement yesterday, has been the member for Maranoa for 25 years.

Mr Springborg led the tributes to Mr Scott and re-affirmed his commitment to remain in his current role.

"Given my role in forming the LNP, I have passionately and proudly served as the Member for Southern Downs and my commitment to this region should never be underestimated," he said.

"My priority is and will continue to be representing the Southern Downs electorate to the best of my ability and returning the LNP to Government."

The State Opposition leader described the Deputy Speaker as a "gentleman" and thanked him for his friendship and support.

"Bruce always put the interests of his constituents first and many people in the Maranoa electorate will attest to his professional and respectful manner," Mr Springborg said.

"Over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed working together to get the best outcome for the people living in the Darling Downs region.

"I wish Bruce, his wife Joan and their family all the very best for whatever the future holds."

Work has already begun to replace the long-standing MP, with nominations for LNP candidates for Maranoa closing on Friday, August 28.

The two men widely tipped to run if Bruce Scott retired, Minister for Agriculture Barnaby Joyce and Warwick identity David Littleproud, remained tight-lipped on their intentions yesterday.

Mr Joyce described Mr Scott's retirement as a "loss to the Nationals".

"Bruce really holds the electorate of Maranoa in his heart and he's done so in a dignified way," he said.

"It is now vitally important that the Maranoa gets a person like Bruce with the capacity to ably represent the seat and our nation."

Southern Downs Mayor Peter Blundell also paid tribute to Mr Scott.

"I certainly think it's the end of a long political career for Bruce. He has been a federal member since I was pursuing a career in political life," he said.

"He's been particularly supportive of my dealings with the Federal Government in helping facilitate meetings."

There is already speculation that Mr Scott may take over the role of speaker following Bronwyn Bishop's resignation on Sunday.

A media spokeswoman for Mr Scott said he would be in the role of Acting Speaker when Parliament resumes on Monday, until an official vote is undertaken.
