A new Warwick Christmas tradition starts next week
PALMERIN St will overflow with decorative baubles, tinsel and candy canes next week as Warwick prepares for Christmas DownTown.
The event will see 60 trees decorated with Christmas flare by businesses in Palmerin St and the effort will culminate in a family friendly Turning the Lights on Party on Friday, December 7.
A street party will kick off at 6.15pm in front of the Warwick Post Office.
Chamber of Commerce president Julia Keogh is expecting a good show.
"I've been blown away by the response to Christmas DownTown,” she said.
"We are still getting contacted from businesses that want to adopt a tree, that's a good sign that it's going to be a winner.”
"Parents can bring their kids out in the early evening to have a look and hopefully it'll bring some tourist out as well.”
The Warwick Post Office will be the focus of the display and manager Jeff Clark had some big ideas in mind.
"We'll have a lot of the blow-ups like inflatable Santas, reindeer and snowmen up in the arch on the top deck, along with lots of rope and string lights,” he said.
"At the front entrance with have a Christmas arch with a Santa's workshop, and as many lights as I can attach to the building without having to drill into it.”
The East Street Singers, The WUPPIES, Central State School Combined Choir, and the Fern Brothers will perform, while Rotary and Warwick East State School P&C run a sausage sizzle and food stall.
There will be free face painting for the kids and no Christmas party would be complete without a visit from Santa Claus, who is expected to arrive about 7.30pm.
The Palmerin St trees will remain dressed up from December 7-27 and their colour palette will be the traditional red, green, white, gold or silver.
Along with bringing the festive cheer, Christmas DownTown will highlight the historic Warwick architecture.
Mrs Keogh said they were assets worth promoting.
"We've become a bit lackadaisical to these beautiful treasures,” she said.
"There are some beautiful buildings yet we walk past them because we're used to them, but almost every time I drive down the main street I see visitors taking photos of the town hall and post office.”
The Turning the Lights on Party kicks off at 6.15pm.
Grafton St, from Palmerin St to Stewart Ave will be closed to traffic from 5.30-8.30pm.
