Police have a short fuse on illegal fireworks

ILLEGAL fireworks briefly lit the Warwick sky last Friday night but the display simmered quickly when police arrived and charged a woman with explosive offences.

Officers were called to Horsman Rd about 7pm, following reports fireworks had been set off in the area.

The source of the cracker show was quickly uncovered and saw a 47-year-old Brisbane woman charged with possessing explosives.

Warwick police acting officer-in-charge Shane Reid said simply possessing fireworks, whether ignited or not, was a serious offence under the Explosives Act.

"It's not common to see fireworks offences but people should know (fireworks) are deemed to be an explosive and you have to have a licence," Acting Senior Sergeant Reid said.

The woman will appear in the Warwick Magistrates Court at a later date.

In other crime news, police continued to make drug arrests last week, with three stashes uncovered in vehicle intercepts on Saturday alone.

At about midday, police discovered a small amount of dangerous drugs in pill and powder form in a vehicle travelling along Horsman Rd.

A 32-year-old Allora woman was charged with possessing dangerous drugs and will appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court.

Forty minutes later a 24-year-old Warwick man was intercepted in a vehicle on Victoria St and charged with both supplying and possessing cannabis.

At 5pm on the same day, police found cannabis in a car travelling along Grafton St.

A 41-year-old man was charged with possessing the drug. Both people will appear in the Warwick Magistrates Court at a later date.

Motorists travelling through the Eight Mile continue to flout the road rules, despite the dangers.

Act Snr Sgt Reid said despite the intersection being a significant black spot area, people are still failing to adhere to road rules.

"The Eight Mile is generating a lot of tickets, with people speeding through the 60kmh section and failing to stop at the stop sign," he said.

Police will continue to target the area and those who defy the law.
