A sweet time for honey producers

APICULTURIST John Craig's honey supplies have been abuzz at the Pig and Calf Sale in recent weeks, with rain sending his bees into overdrive.

Things seemed dire for Mr Craig and his bees as 2014 drew to a close. With next to no honey being produced in the hives, he was forced to buy product from other suppliers.

In December the rain started to fall, and within a week there was so much flowering the bees went back into full production.

Mr Craig said when it came to producing honey, he just had to roll with the seasons.

"I've got enough honey to last me a good while now," he said.

"In spring there wasn't much growing apart from canola - after the canola I didn't know what I would do."

For Mr Craig the rain's effect on local farmers' crops was a godsend, with the bees producing a wide range of flavoured honey.

"The farmers are growing a range of crops that the bees love - especially the sunflowers," he said.

"Now I'm looking around at the trees and the trees are all looking good too."

Last year the industry seemed to be in a bit of a crisis with honey and bee shortages, but for the owner of Carramar Apiaries all eyes are on the future.

"If we get good rain through autumn it'll be even better," he said.

"If we can get an inch or two a fortnight it'll be good - it all depends on the seasons."

Carramar's locally produced honey, from hives moved across the area, proves to be a popular treat at the Pig and Calf Sale each Wednesday.

"Some people think that when honey goes candied it has to be tossed out," Mr Craig said.

"All you have to do is warm it up and it's as good as new."
