Grain processing business wants new Wellcamp factory
A DEVELOPER is looking to build a new grain processing and storage facility on the booming western outskirts of Toowoomba.
The proposal comprises of a processing and storage building, separate administration building, silo storage and external parking and vehicle circulation areas.
Developer Abg Foods lodged a material change of use application with Toowoomba Regional Council for a property located at 3/57 Heinemann Rd, Wellcamp.
The site is located about 8.2km west of Toowoomba.
The surrounding land is used for grain storage and processing to the north-west, transport and logistic uses to the north and west and rural land to the east and south.
The proposed development will accept grain that has been harvested off-site.
Grain will be transferred from trucks into silos on the western side of the building pending processing.
The processing, which consists of sieving or shaking the grain to separate unwanted material from the product, will be completed within the processing building.
The key emission from the process, being grain dust, will be captured through a mechanical extraction system and directed through ducts to an enclosed grain dust bin.
Abg Foods says this will ensure that the emissions from the process are captured and, therefore, the potential for off-site impacts will be mitigated.
After the processing is completed, the grain will be stored within the warehouse and/or external silo storage, pending containerisation.
When the grain is ready to be moved off-site to market or for sale, the grain will be transferred from silo storage to a shipping container storage that is suitable for road transport.
The shipping containers will then be loaded onto heavy transport, with the maximum design vehicle being a B-Double, and transported off-site to market.
The containers will be moved directly to the Port of Brisbane or, potentially, to a rail transfer facility, subject to future upgrade of the rail connection.
The application was lodged last week and is now in the acknowledgment notice period.
