Bridge work on roads' agenda
FOLLOWING calls for improvements to a dangerous stretch of the New England Highway, south of Ballandean, local member Lawrence Springborg has applied political pressure to the cause.
The State Government announced it will finalise a business case for the replacement and realignment of the Accommodation Creek Bridge along the New England Hwy, south of Ballandean.
The announcement was a response to a question the Member for Southern Downs Mr Springborg asked the Minister for Main Roads, Fisheries and Marine Infrastructure Craig Wallace, earlier this month.
"Will the Minister advise if there is any forward planning for the replacement of the Accommodation Creek Bridge and the realignment of the New England Hwy south of Ballandean, near Lyra?" Mr Springborg asked.
While Main Roads had already lowered the speed limit in recent months along the stretch of road, locals said it wasn't enough to stop potential accidents.
"An options analysis for the realignment and replacement of Accommodation Creek Bridge was completed in 2010," Mr Wallace replied to Mr Springborg.
"Community consultation was carried out as part of the department's initial investigation for future corridor planning, under this analysis project.
"The department will finalise a business case for this project under its state planning program in 2012-13."
