Accused dope dealing pensioner banked $115,000: court

A PENSIONER pulled over by police while driving through Millmerran west of Toowoomba was found with 1.35kg of marijuana in the boot of his car, police claim.

Tracey Thomas Starkey, 52, had been returning to his home on the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday, May 31, from Wangaratta in Victoria but had allegedly been under police surveillance, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

A police search of his Sunshine Coast home the same day had allegedly turned up another 1.5kg of marijuana, the court heard.

Perusing the police written objection to bail document, Magistrate Damian Carroll said it was claimed by police that Starkey had deposited more than $100,000 in cash into his bank account in the past year yet his income from his pension was a little over $800 a fortnight.

However, duty solicitor Chris Lumme said his client instructed he could explain the large amount of money deposited, some of which he had borrowed and the rest he had received by inheritance after the death of an aunt.

Starkey was not required to enter any pleas to 12 charges including trafficking in marijuana between November 1, last year, and Tuesday this week, possessing dangerous drugs, and unlawful possession of weapons.

Mr Lumme said his client was prepared to surrender his passport, not leave Queensland without permission, live with his partner in Caloundra and report to police daily if granted bail.

Starkey instructed he didn't use marijuana himself but had blood pressure and other health issues, he said.

Mr Carroll said he accepted Starkey had only a limited criminal history but he refused bail on the basis of the seriousness of the charges and that he considered the 52-year-old an unacceptable risk of re-offending.

Starkey was remanded in custody to appear before the Maroochydore Magistrates Court for committal mention on July 7.
