Accused robber threatened staff with tyre iron, court told

WHEN John Frederick Murray entered the Foodworks store on Main St Monday night, he allegedly held a tyre iron and threatened two staff members before stealing cash.

The 19-year-old Berserker man appeared in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday charged with entering the premises with intent and robbery while armed.

No application for bail was made by the man's defence solicitor, and so the teenager will remain in custody until his next court appearance on March 9.

Rockhampton CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Moon said they quickly apprehended Mr Murray, who fled on foot.

"At 8pm the male offender entered the Foodworks on Main St brandishing what would be alleged to be a tyre iron, threatened staff and obtained a sum of money," Det Snr Sgt Moon said.

Fortunately police were one street away and were able to track the man with the dog squad, apprehending him within minutes of the armed robbery occurring.

Foodworks staff members were not physically injured.
