ADE Larsen may be a newbie on the political scene, but he is planning on rattling some cages in the Southern Downs electorate.

The local candidate for Katter's Australia Party hopes this year's State election will see a major swing away from current local member Lawrence Springborg and the LNP, and towards the new party.

Strong interest has already been gauged for Katter's Australia Party in northern Queensland, and Texas-based Mr Larsen said he believed Southern Downs voters needed a different voice.

"My goal is to win and I'm concentrating on my campaign," he said.

"It's a big ask knocking off Lawrence Springborg who constantly gets 67% of votes, though in 1998 One Nation almost beat him.

"We're going to pick up all of the One Nation voters and we're going to pick up ALP and LNP voters."

He conceded elections were hard to predict, but said he'd been told he already had large numbers in support.

"People say to me every day 'I voted ALP or Country Party all my life and they've screwed me - you'll get my vote'," he said.

"I don't want to sound cocky, but this time around things are different. We're going to pick up a lot of votes.

"The people of Southern Downs want a voice in parliament. They want me to go to George St and do what they want, not the opposite."

Speaking from the Stanthorpe Show, Lawrence Springborg said he trusted the judgement of his electorate.

"People are going to make all sorts of claims, candidates always do," he said.

"The people of Southern Downs judge who they want to be their member. I'm passionate about this area and I'm going to continue to work hard and make sure regional Queensland is looked after and the LNP will do that."
