Admin's shock at sudden close of popular Facebook page
UPDATE: The Warwick Classifieds page has now been restored after Facebook reviewed its content and found it to comply with community standards.
EARLIER: One of Warwick's most popular social media pages has been shut down overnight, leaving 20,000 users frustrated and administrators still unclear about what went wrong.
The threat of permanent closure hangs over the popular Facebook group, Warwick Classifieds, but administrators have been given no clear indication of what the problem was and how they can fix it before website moderators swoop in and shut the page down.
A "vague and unhelpful” message stating the group did not meet Facebook's community standards was the only explanation administrators received when it was suddenly disabled last night.
For 20,000 users, who appear to have been "booted off” the page, it was even more brutal.
Administrator Lynda Arazie said she was concerned about the way Facebook handled the incident and the message it sent to users.
"For all the members it looks like you have been removed from the group and blocked, which is a pain because we have over 20,000 members and they are all messaging ask asking why they have been removed,” she said.
Mrs Arazie has called for Facebook to be more specific about issues related to community groups.
"We are in the dark,” she said.
"The feedback they have given is really vague. It just said that it could be your profile picture, it could be your name or something in the content.”
Group administrators have been given one chance to fix the problem and send it to Facebook moderators for a review.
"If they find out it goes against their community standards they will delete the page,” Mrs Arazie said.
The Warwick mother and nurse, who has been helping run the page for a few years, said the issue may have been around people selling animals, which is not allowed under Facebook rules.
"But we really don't know,” she said.
Mrs Arazie spoke about the responsibility she faced as administrator of Warwick Classifieds, a group used by thousands to sell items, review products and share important information.
"It really varies, but some days I would easily spend three or four hours,” she said.
"I like to get on there and make sure there is no foul language and defamation. I do that fairly often and make sure it is all OK because people can get pretty nasty.”
Mrs Arazie has also faced vicious personal attacks from users.
"It can be frustrating and hurtful,” she said.
"I think people forget you're human. We are all volunteers, we all have jobs outside of this or are stay-at-home mums. We all have lives outside Facebook and people tend to forget that.”
Warwick Classifieds currently has three administrators and three moderators.
But some people in the community have called for more involvement in the group.
"We need more admins. I'm constantly reporting unneeded and disgusting posts,” Graham Wood said on social media.
Other's have expressed their disappointment that the page had been shut down.
"What rubbish! Can't understand why they would remove the group!” Libby Shepherd said.
"Hope it is back up and running very soon,” Stephen Wilson said.
Mrs Arazie said a review was currently with Facebook, who will determine the fate of the page.
