Hawthorn's Cyril Rioli is 'no shoo-in' for Saturday

HAWTHORN defender Josh Gibson says Cyril Rioli is no shoo-in to play in Saturday's preliminary final against Port Adelaide despite the star forward pulling up well from his first big training session since damaging his hamstring in round 15 against the Gold Coast.

Fullback Gibson said yesterday it was too early to call on whether Rioli would make his return and also cautioned against the importance that was being placed on his return to the side.

"There's no saying he's playing yet, we're not saying he's not," he said.

"There's still plenty of days before we have to select the side.

"Everything in our camp doesn't rely on Cyril playing, but if he's out there it's a fantastic boost for the club.

"I don't think it's a disruption.

"If he gets the all clear from the docs and the fitness staff to play, and his hamstring's fine, then you'd pick Cyril Rioli in your team.

"The only time it can cause disruption is if we were taking him in injured."

Gibson said speculation veteran Brad Sewell could miss out if Rioli is recalled was also premature.

"Sewelly's an inside mid and Cyril's a forward, so I don't know if they're a straight swap," he said.

"Sewelly played on the weekend, played really well and Cyril hasn't played since round 15, so I don't know how we can make a call on that taking place yet."
