Redbacks have shock win to Tigers

A FAULTLESS display of courage and a genuine desire to win brought ladder leaders Toowoomba Tigers back to the field and opened the door for the Redbacks to play September football.

In a freakish display of dry weather football in appalling conditions, Kurt Millard, Matt Sinkins and Brendan Iles cut the much-vaunted Tigers midfield to ribbons.

Delivering a 13.5(83) to Tigers 8.7(55) scoreline the Redbacks looked the goods from the very first bounce of the game through to the final siren.

The defensive six set up a virtual brick wall that all but shut out Tigers usual free-flowing scoring.

Shannon Cameron, Tony Chandler, Kris Millard, Andrew Bardsley and Steve Martin continually pushed the play forward out of defence allowing the midfield a free run into a well set-up attack.

Bryce Bodsworth's return to form in his new role on the forward line, with some bustling charges through a stunned Tigers defence left the forward line open for the on-ballers to capitalise.

Alex Cutmore ended the day by disposing of his third different opponent as easily as he did the first two. Toowoomba had no answer to Cutty's leap, fitness and all-round ball control.

The return to the paddock of utilities Josh Andrews and Paul Hutchins added to the overall strength of a team that really knows how to stand up when cornered.

Millard's intelligent use of the inter-change bench and nursing of players due to the conditions was perfect.

The Redbacks have now defeated the top three teams in the competition and genuinely have clubs looking over their shoulders.

The continuing improvement of Dave Walker, Nick Donges, Gavin O'Leary, Jake Peasnell, Kurt Heier and Vaughn Skelly combined with the veteran input from Clinton McErvale and Jason Wright augers well for the rest of 2010.

A similar scenario was facing the U/14 age group on Saturday.

Could they make it through to finals to be the first ever Redbacks junior team to do so? Nobody was going to stop them. What was expected to be a close game against Eastern Stingers was an absolute Redbacks blow out. The scoreboard showing a stunning 18.17(125) to 1.3. (9) was a team effort.

Some of the better players were, Tim Tate, Darcy Minogue, Cassie Cullen, Luke Cannon, Shane Iles, Max Green-Galloway and Mitch Drayton.
