AFP investigating Courier-Mail

THE Australian Federal Police has launched an official investigation into The Courier-Mail after a referral from the federal Attorney-General over a potential breach of the Family Law Act.

Last month, the AFP confirmed it was reviewing whether to investigate the News Limited newspaper after it ran the photographs and names of four sisters at the centre of an international custody dispute.

The Family Law Act prevents media outlets from identifying children involved in custody disputes before the Family Court.

A federal police spokeswoman said she could not name the media outlet now it was under investigation.

"The AFP can confirm that it received a referral from the Attorney-General's Department on May 22 relating to alleged contravention of court publication restrictions contained in section 121 of the Family Law Act 1975," she said in a statement.
