Agencies join for disaster management practice in Warwick
SOUTHERN Downs Regional Council chambers became the control room for a practice emergency meeting of more than 10 state, local and non-government agencies on Thursday.
Titled Exercise Clarion, the simulation was based around an extreme flood event occurring in the Condamine River.
Police, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, ambulance, SES, Red Cross and Department of Communities representatives took part in various roles.
Inspector Hemmo De Vries, of QFES Warwick Command, said past floods had put a reality to the exercise.
"The area has been through three floods already," Insp De Vries said.
"It puts a reality to it, it's a realistic possibility regardless of weather forecasts.
"These exercises are a good opportunity to work with other agencies and improve our communication and co-ordination."
Cr Neil Meiklejohn was acting chair for the exercise and said it was a learning experience for everyone involved.
"We do these training exercises at least once a year to make sure of our individual roles," Cr Meiklejohn said.
"These kinds of situations define our community.
"Conditions can change very quickly in a disaster situation and it's our co-operation that minimises those impacts."
Mayor Peter Blundell said the exercise highlighted the value of the new MySDRC App.
"The alerts page was an extremely useful tool during the exercise to provide timely and critical alerts to those who would be affected by the flooding," he said. "I encourage more people to download the app and start accessing its many benefits."
The exercise tied in with the RACQ Get Ready Week, which began yesterday.
Information booths will be held at Stanthorpe Piazza today and Rose City Shoppingworld tomorrow and Thursday.
