Aircraft engineer goes racing at Warwick Dragway
DRAG RACING: By day he is an aircraft engineer.
By weekend he is a drag racer.
Well that is the case this weekend at the Mopar Muscle Weekend after Dan Robertson drove his 1972 VH Valiant Charger to Warwick for his debut in drag racing.
"I work with fibre glass at the airport so some of that experience helped a little with work inside the Charger,” he said.
He reached a fastest speed of 115kmh on the 200m drag strip in Warwick and reckons he can better that.
"There are a few gremlins when I try to get full power, the motor coughs and splutters a bit,” he said.
He drove his competition car to Warwick and occasionally drives it to work at the airport. He has a main car and it isn't the Charger.
"I bought the car as a cruising type car and wanted to go fast. Rather than go fast on the streets and get caught, I decided to try drag racing,” Robertson said.
He started the weekend by being part of the car show in Leslie Park from 10am Saturday.
"There was good interest in the cars, one person told me I had a broken battery clamp, it must have broken it on the way to the park.”
There are 45 Mopar Muscle cars at the Warwick Dragway today with finals in the early afternoon.
