'Long past its prime', Warwick landmark demolished
A PART of the Albion St landscape was levelled yesterday.
One of Warwick's oldest buildings was demolished, after an application was approved by the Southern Downs Regional Council.
David Noffke of Guunna Do Property Maintainence said he had been tasked with the demolition job.
"We started at about 6.15am and had the whole building down by 7am," he said.
"We wanted it all done early for safety reasons. There are a few businesses around here and we wanted to get it down before people were around.
"We'll have the block cleared by Friday.
"It was a grand old building but it was long past its prime. It came down pretty easily."
Mr Noffke said he believed the house had been in the Brown family for over 100 years.
"Knocking it over is the best thing that could happen," he said.
"Vandals and kids had been breaking into it for years. It really wasn't safe and if people were to keep going in there it was only a matter of time until someone got really hurt.
"Once the site is cleared we're going to plant some grass and put a nice fence up and make it a bit easier for the Browns to sell it.
"I've been dealing with the family with four months.
"They're beautiful people and they've been through a real rough patch.
"It's good to be able to do this for them and help them out."
Mr Noffke said the Albion St had been a big part of the Brown's lives.
"It would have been really hard for them to say goodbye to that house and the history," he said.
The 1750sqm block is being sold as residential land, but has commercial potential.
