Aleppo evacuation nears end
THE evacuation of fighters and civilians from former rebel strongholds in Aleppo has resumed after a 24-hour suspension and is nearing its conclusion. As snow fell in the war-ravaged city, hundreds filed onto buses bound for opposition-held areas. The departures mark a significant victory for Syria's President Bashar Assad, who is on the verge of assuming full control of the country's largest city after more than four years of fighting. According to the United Nations, about 25,000 fighters and civilians have been evacuated from Aleppo since Syrian opposition forces agreed last week to surrender their last remaining territory in the east of the city.
