All abilities shine at big aquatic fun day
THE whole of Warwick is getting involved in Disability Action Week as community events kick off throughout the Rose City.
The Warwick Indoor Recreation & Aquatic Centre partnered with Swimming Queensland to host a free Aquatic Participation Fun Day last Friday.
The day was funded by Queensland Government, Swimming Australia and the support of Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation.
There were more than 60 participants who attended the day along with special needs teachers and carers.
Activities included both dry land and in-water games, which were designed to help participants gain skills and confidence to safely enjoy all the benefits of swimming.
WIRAC Aquatic co-ordinator Karen Peters said the fun day took about eight weeks to organise.
"It brings people with disabilities together with able-bodied people," she said.
"It can bring the whole community together and highlight what people with disabilities can do."
Ms Peters said the day was a great success and enjoyed by all.
"We even had the Mount Gordon boys come and help with cooking the barbecue," she said.
Stanthorpe Learning Lifestyle Centre's Kerri Smithers said the day helped with water awareness education.
"The people we support love the pool and enjoy being in the water," she said.
"The structures and effort put into the day made for great memories, as well as strengthening skills that the guys already have and need to keep."
Now in its third year, the program of the annual Fun Day was slightly different from last time.
"It's getting better and better every year," Ms Peters said.
"We did change the structure a little bit more to incorporate dry land skills that we could do the on land, so that anyone could participate.
"We catered for everyone."
More events are planned for this week including indoor bowls, more WIRAC activities and a dance night.
