All aboard new loco to explore the region
IT'S full steam ahead for Southern Downs rail enthusiasts with the arrival of a replacement train in Warwick later this afternoon.
The Southern Downs Steam Railway has successfully found a temporary replacement for their train, which had a major breakdown in November last year.
SDSR secretary Bob Amos said the new steam train would arrive in Warwick after 5pm this afternoon.
"We have been negotiating with Queensland Rail who are loaning us an alternative steam locomotive," he said.
"The train will begin its journey from the Ipswich Railway Workshop at 9.45am."
Mr Amos said the replacement train allowed the group to resume running vintage train excursions across the Southern Downs.
"We are in the process of repairing our old loco, which could take a few months," he said.
"Meanwhile we'll be able to continue our trips, while we pay hire fees."
The next steam train trip will take place on Australia Day, taking passengers from Warwick through Stanthorpe to Wallangarra and back.
Mr Amos said the train would leave at 8am and return at 6pm.
"Clients come from a long way for an authentic steam train experience," he said.
"We also do trips from Warwick to Clifton and from Warwick to Toowoomba."
The Southern Downs Steam Railway is a not-for-profit group run by volunteers.
