Warwick Women's Golf
The rain during the week was welcome and fortunately provided little disruption to this week's events despite some dire predictions by our weather forecasters. Last Wednesday a good field of 26 women braved some very windy conditions to take part in the first 9- and 18-hole stableford event for the year, generously sponsored by Mel at Style Shoes.
Majella Kahler combined two good nines to return a respectable 34pts which was just good enough to pip Helen Olsen and take home the winning voucher. There was no runner-up prize on the day but Helen was fortunate to have returned 17pts, which was enough to win the voucher for the front nine and Ann Tomkins returned the same score to take home the prize for the best back nine.
As often happens, the approach shots were won by the trophy winners as well, with both Helen and Ann taking out their respective divisions in the approach on 11 along with Joy Bowles in the 3rd division, and Majella being closest to the hole on 9.
The Pro's Approach balls went to Danielle Seibel (2), Mary Young and Majella. The rest of the field scored as follows: H Olsen 33, A Tomkins, D Seibel, E Casey 29, J Burt 28, J Maher, T Ingall, P Hemmings, J Bowles, G Porter, M Vincent, M Wright 27, J Stiff 26, T Bell, J Barnes 25, K Mackie, G Young, A Payne, J Fysh 24, P McIntosh 23, J Stewart 22, M Young 21, M McLennan, S O'Connell 20, G Mills.
Saturday turned into a pleasant day for golf, albeit a little humid at times and the committee was delighted to welcome 36 lady golfers, including at least 10 of our newer members, to the stableford team event. New member Helen Gengos played and was on hand after to present the many trophies that she and husband David had provided for the day. A large majority of the field stayed on to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea and cheer on the prize winners.
Captain Mary may have had some inside knowledge when she chose her team and the combination of Mary, Ellie Casey, Jean Fysh and Chris Munro were far too good for the rest of the field, scoring a fantastic 84pts in the aggregate format. Chris Munro made her maiden acceptance speech acknowledging how pro-active the women's committee had been in the past year and thanking them for all the support and encouragement the new members had received.
A countback was required before the team of Tub Ingall, Joy Bowles, Judy Stiff and Tracey Spinetti could be awarded the runners-up prizes with 78pts. The daily approaches went to Judy Lester in the hole on 13th, and Liz Cockram, Vonnie Pinington and Anne Lyons in the graded approach on 7th. With a good number of entrants in the Pro Approach, balls were awarded to Liz Cockram (3), Judy Lester, Jill Barnes, Ellie Casey and Mary Young. The new members had an approach on 5th and a lucky draw and these two balls were won by Tracey Spinetti and Vicki McKnight. We hope the day was an enjoyable introduction to competition golf for our newer ladies and that we will see some of them back in our fields soon.
Other scores in team event: M McLennan, T Bell, A Lyons, J Washbourne 78, J Burt, D Johnston, A Tomkins, P Hemmings 76, L Cockram, P McIntosh, M Seibel, A Ellis 73, M Kahler, G Young, L Lane, R Darton 73, M Adcock, Y Pinington, H Olsen, V McKnight 70, J Lester, G Watts, S Cooper, H Gengos 66, J Stewart, J Barnes, M Burley, T Farrell 57.
Today's event is the Mid-Week Medal for February, a single stroke played on the white course, with a putting competition included. We are playing in two divisions for trophies kindly supplied each month by the Warwick RSL.
On Saturday we will also be playing on the white course when the Condamine Club Hawker Road Function Centre provides sponsorship for our March Monthly Medal. Both these events and the trophies won are highly valued by our women golfers and should attract large numbers.
This is also a good opportunity to have a bit of practice on the white course before we start the Club Championships on Saturday, March 10. By now you should have the two weekends marked on your golfing calendars. If you are playing the four rounds there is a considerable saving to be made by paying an up-front fee of $50 for all four days.
Wednesday, March 7 is the first Open Day of the year, at Pittsworth, and Mel will be sending those nominations through early this week if you are interested. At the end of March, we will field a team in the Adam Falconer Shield Pennants once again after re-joining the competition this year. Captain Mary Young, Melanie McLennan, Anna Cox, Jill Barnes and Janine Stewart will represent us at Pittsworth on March 23 against a Stanthorpe women's team. Cheers go out to members Jan Aspinall and Majella Kahler who are both mending this week. Our thoughts are with you both.
Warwick Sporters Golf Club
Last Wednesday a smaller field of 49 members teed off in weather threatening conditions, bringing a high sook factor. Winner on the day was that popular member of the Buggy Boyz, Herbie Ware with 42 points, from runner-up Ron Simon on 38 points. Ball rundown: Derrick Hewitt 38, Mick Banks 36, Gary 2 Names 36, Eddy Raets 36, Wayne Foster 35 and the ageless Ken Burley 35.
NTP's: The 5th was a skinner, Gary 2 Names on 7th, Tony Kahler on 9th, pro pin on 11th The Loin King (for the second week in a row!) 4, Herb Ware/Ken Burley2, S Eldridge/Mike Hoskin 1 each. Pro pin on 13th, Mike Hoskin 4, Peter Farrell/ Mort Henderson/ Daffy Hynes 2 each, Keith Farrell on 16th.
Sporters members are reminded that the Sporters AGM is on après golf on Wednesday starting about 5.30pm. The committee asks that all members attend to support Sporters going forward, after what has been a very successful year. Shoot-Out participants are reminded that today is the last qualifying day for the 2018 shootout.
A full list of the final 19 qualifiers will be published next week. If you qualified and are not available for the shootout on March 21, please advise a committee member asap. And our golf thought for the day, with apologies to Proverbs 31-7, 'Let him drink and forget his putting, and remember his misery no more!' Enjoy your golf!
Langham Slashers Golf
An overcast morning greeted a good field of keen golfers last Sunday to play the front nine for trophies kindly donated by club member Bert Bownds, thanks Bert for putting on the day. Gary Millard was the eventual winner, posting a nett score of 22 to win by one shot from runner-up Gerry Morrisey on nett 23.
Chris Hall played some good golf to have the best gross for the day with a 41 off the stick and also collected the seventh and ninth pins, Laurie King had the least putts with 12, Keith Clarke picked up the pin on the fifth hole, big hitting Graham Olsen won the longest drive and Leigh Nisbet was our Bradman ball winner on the day. Thanks to everyone who played, I am sure an enjoyable morning was had by all. Next week we will play the back nine for another fun morning of golf. See you all next week.
