Allora athlete finishes nationals with a gold and silver

ATHLETICS: Allora thrower Matthew Denny has finished the Australian Athletics Championships with a gold and silver medal in Sydney.

Late Saturday, Denny was second in discus behind fellow Olympian Julian Wruck.

Wruck threw a best on 61.56m with his fourth attempt.

Denny had a best of 61.28m with his fifth throw.

While he didn't win, Denny would have been happy to have six legal throws, 59.68, 58.0, 60.09, 58.41, 61.28 and 59.6.

Both Wruck and Denny were below the world championships qualifying distance of 65m.

Denny will be heading to Europe in quest of a world championship qualifier.

In junior events, Zac Caterson completed another fine championships with three silvers in javelin, shot and discus.

The Warwick State High School student now has 16 national medals.
