Allora athlete set for Gold Coast games

ATHLETICS: Allora thrower Matthew Denny is virtually assured on selection for Australia in the 2018 Commonwealth Games after winning the hammer and discus double at the games trials at the Gold Coast.

He won the national title double and will back up at the Gold Coast in April two years after a 19th place in discus at the Olympic Games in Rio.

Denny won the national hammer throw title with a throw of 72.78m, seven metres more than the runner up.

He backed up to win the discus with 64.03m with one of his best throws since Rio.

Denny won the discus by .47m from fellow Queenslander Benn Harradine with another Queenslander Julian Wruck third with 60.96m.

While he had games qualifiers leading up to the trials, Denny said before heading to the trials at the games athletics venue Carrera that his aim was to guarantee his selection with wins in hammer and discus. Denny has been guided throughout his career by Toowoomba-based coach Grahame Pitt.

Denny is set to join netballer Laura Geitz as one of the two Allora athletes representing Australia in the Commonwealth Games.
