Geitz tipped to be named captain
ALLORA goalkeeper Laura Geitz is odds-on to be Mission Queensland Firebirds captain for the rest of the season following an injury to captain Lauren Nourse.
It was confirmed this week that Nourse is out for the season after sustaining a tear to her anterior cruciate ligament in Sunday's victory against Central Pulse.
Geitz as vice-captain and a current Australian player is a strong chance to move up to the captaincy.
If she does, the Allora player has a great chance to lead the Firebirds to an inaugural title win.
Last season former Warwick West State School student Clare McMeniman was vice-captain so she could return to the role for the rest of the season.
The chances of Geitz being appointed captain are enhanced as she has started the season in outstanding form.
The Firebirds play the Vixens tomorrow.
Geitz was recognised for her outstanding achievement in sport with three wins in the National Youth Week awards which were presented at the Warwick Town Hall last week.
She won the 18-25 years achievement award, the sporting ambassador of the year award and sporting female achievement award.
In what was an outstanding awards presentation for Allora, Matthew Denny won a 15-17 years sporting achievement award and the sporting male achievement award.
Geitz will be in Warwick on Friday for a coaching clinic at Barnes Park.
