Team mentality

IT means an early start and some enroute nerves but nothing will distract from the fact today Allora Swim Club have 33 swimmers on the blocks for the 2010 McDonald’s Queensland Championships.

It is the largest team the club has ever taken to the Brisbane Aquatic Centre event.

And while club vice-president Angela Van der Poel was expecting some impressive performances, she said the focus was also on gaining experience.

“For many of our younger swimmers it will be their first experience on the blocks at Chandler,” Van der Poel said.

“Most are competing in relay teams representing our club, so they are with their mates.

“And that is a lovely way to be initiated into swimming at state level.

“It is also good exposure for them; if they do make a regional team later and have to compete in Brisbane, it is not as daunting.”

But she explained there were also Allora competitors working hard to make national qualifying times at the meet to earn a spot in the Australian championships early next year.

The championships start with the freestyle and medley relays today, with the individual events continuing until December 17.

Three Allora club members – Matt Kanowski, 17, Josh Day, 14 and Abbey Pout, 12 – will be swimming in Darling Downs regional relay teams today.

The Allora swimming team includes: Hunter Marsh, James Gilmore, Nick Van der Poel, Logan Caithness, Sam Delaney, Nicholas Gardner, David Day, Kyle Caitling, Bronte Collins, Abbey Pout, Caitlin Hill, Sally Higgins, Jessica Ryan, Chloe Ryan, Sarah Ogden, Paris Milburn, Tim Collins, Josh Day, Anthony Bannister, Matt Denny, Thea Milburn, Abbey Harrison, Ally Van der Poel, Tiana Hoffman, Brendan Hoffman, Jai Caitling, Lachlan Henry, Toby Gilmore, Courtney Davidson, Sophie Ryan, Mary Higgins and Ailish Wallace.
