Allora athletics star Matthew Denny set to bring home gold
BEING one year younger than most of his opponents did not stop Allora student Matthew Denny winning three gold medals at the Australian All Schools Nationals in Hobart.
Denny competed in Hobart on Saturday and Sunday and yesterday represented Toowoomba Grammar School in the national knockout championships.
In the state championships, he competed in the U17 age group but had to go up a year at the nationals where there are two years per age group.
On Saturday, Denny, 16, won the hammer with a distance of 74.63m.
It was announced at the meeting that his throw was a new national record as the paperwork had not been processed for his 75.80m throw at the Gold Coast a week earlier.
Denny capped a fine Saturday with a throw of 64.45m to win the discus, a new national record, with a 1.5kg discus.
On Sunday, he went into the shot put ranked second behind a thrower from New South Wales.
Denny was third after his first throw with a distance of 16.9m, second after his third throw with 17.4m and then won the event with 18.73m with his fourth and last throw.
He threw a 5kg shot on Sunday but had the luxury of competing with a 4kg shot yesterday when he won the event with 21.1m.
Denny said he was happy with his distances in Hobart.
"It was a bit frustrating in the hammer when the strong wind put you off balance but I think I handled the conditions pretty well," he said.
In July, he will represent Australia in the World Youth Championships in Ukraine. Currently, he is number one in the world in discus with a best of 4m head of his nearest rival.
"Hopefully I can win gold in discus and finish in the top three in hammer," Denny said.
Allora State School student Jack Bannister was also a year younger than most of his competitors and was eighth in discus at the nationals.
