Allora's Matthew Denny books spot in Olympic team

ATHLETICS: Allora thrower Matthew Denny finally has an Olympic qualifier in discus after throwing 65.37m in a competition in California.

A month ago, he threw a best of 64.73m during a trip to America to just fail in his quest for the 65m Olympic qualification.

All qualifying throws and distances have to be ratified by Athletics Australia but Matthew can virtually start packing his bags for the August Oympics in Rio de Janeiro. He is still to be officially added to the team.

While he travelled overseas by himself a month ago, his Toowoomba-based coach Grahame Pitt also made the trip to America this time.

Matthew's father John Denny said the family was so happy that he had an Olympic qualifier.

"We are so proud that he never gave up," John said.

"Matthew won the competition in America and I believe his qualifier was with his third throw."

The thrower and coach left on Wednesday for America and Matthew threw his qualifier in discus in his first competition this trip.

He has another competition tomorrow and the plans are to compete again before returning home.

John said at the present time, Matthew had dropped hammer to concentrate on discus.

"He will go back to hammer next season but won't do it to after the Olympics," John said.
