Allora thrower wins second successive hammer throw

ATHLETICS: Allora thrower Matthew Denny started the Australian Athletics Championships with gold in the open hammer throw yesterday afternoon.

He won with a throw of 68.44m, 1.8m better than the runner up to make it two wins in two years.

His best chance for Olympic qualification is today in discus.

Yesterday, qualification was cancelled so all 15 will contest the discus final. Denny was second last year behind Julian Wruck and they are both strong chances this year.

Denny, who has bettered 63m in discus, needs 65m to qualify for the Olympics.

Victory for Beattie

WARWICK athlete Carlee Beattie finished first in her long jump class at the titles to continue her drive towards the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics.

She was first in the T47 class with 5.75m but showed good consistency with leaps of 5.62m and 5.50m in her other two jumps.

She is one of nine nominees for Female Para-Athlete of the Year to be announced this weekend.
