Alyvia swaps Schoolies to help children of Cambodia

ALYVIA Greene-Galloway knows what it's like to need help in her darkest hour.

At age six she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, a condition that changed her life forever.

It's a condition she's spent most of her life battling, but it hasn't stopped her from achieving her goals.

Now a healthy and happy 16-year-old, Alyvia has her eyes on paying it forward.

For a long time she's dreamed of doing humanitarian work - and now she's being given the chance.

When her classmates head off to Schoolies in November, Alyvia will be heading further abroad.

"I will be helping teach English to the children of Feeding the Dreams in Cambodia," she said. "I want to help the children of Cambodia.

"I'd rather spend my money on children's education than alcohol."

The trip is a major milestone for the Yangan teen.

"I've volunteered for little companies locally but nothing on this scale," she said.

"I've never even been out of Australia.

"This is something I've always wanted to do since I was a kid."

The Warwick High student also plans on volunteering for Greenpeace when she returns.

Proud mum Jenn Greene-Galloway said Alyvia was following in her footsteps.

"We're just so proud of Alyvia's achievements," she said. "She just keeps on keeping on."

To help Alyvia on her journey, the Yangan community has rallied its support.

The Yangan and District Progress Association is donating $1500 towards Alyvia's trip to Cambodia.

"This is the sort of thing the YADPA is all about," president Colin Pope said.

"We've helped out others around Yangan, as well as donating some money towards re-surfacing the tennis courts."

To help on her journey, Alyvia has set up a Go Fund Me account.
