AMA insists detained kids must be freed

THE Australian Medical Association is again pushing the Federal Government to release asylum seeker children from detention.

Releasing the AMA's revised Health Care of Asylum Seekers position statement on Wednesday, association president Brian Owler said children in detention should be moved to healthier and more humane environments in the community.

"Detention has severe adverse effects on the health of all asylum seekers, but the harms in children are more serious," he said.

The immigration detention and community statistics summary from November 30 listed 104 children in immigration detention facilities on the Australian mainland, 70 on Nauru and 331 children in community detention.

The AMA is calling on the government to release detained children as early as possible and establish an independent statutory body to investigate and advise on the health and welfare of asylum seekers.
