Animal rescue desperate for help

A DESPERATE lack of animal foster carers has sparked fears for the Rose City's neediest dogs and cats.

Southern Downs Ark has made an impassioned plea for carers, with a lack of volunteers pushing the group to make tough choices.

President Ann Simon said the group had been forced to put two dogs in kennels for lack of foster carers

"We supply all the food, worming, vaccinations

and vet checks," Ms Simon said.

"We need people who have good fencing so the dog is secure and safe, and basically give them love," she said.

"On top of that, they need some attention and someone to play with."

Warwick resident Joan Hassler cares for Billy.

The four-year-old dog

was a pound dog saved by Southern Downs Ark.

"My first dogs were two emergency cases, and they were adopted," Ms Hassler said.

"I like looking after couch potatoes," she said.

"Billy certainly isn't that."

Ms Simon said potential carers would have consider the possibility of caring for a dog an "open-ended" length of time.

"It could be days, weeks or months before a dog is adopted," Ms Simon said.

Southern Downs Ark has seven foster carers.

It needs more pet-lovers to take up this "extremely rewarding" position, Ms Simon said.
