Annual pig races thrill crowd
THE warm weather could not keep the crowds down on Saturday as racegoers filed into the Sandy Creek Pub for the annual Pig Races.
The event was a fundraiser for Wheatvale State School and RACQ CareFlight, with proceeds to be split between the two charities.
"Last year we raised $14,000, which meant $7000 went to each of them," Wheatvale P & C president Merv Colman said.
"We would like to match or even beat that this year."
To help with fundraising, pigs were auctioned off during a Calcutta, where prices as high as $60 were fetched during bidding for the first race.
"We had sweeps for each pig as well," Mr Colman said.
"The winner of each pig gets half of the prize money and the other half goes to charity."
Mr Colman said he loved the enjoyment that came with pig racing.
"They're great entertainment, they're really fun," he said.
"It's just a different atmosphere for the pig races; you have to have watched them before to understand.
"You just don't see the atmosphere you get at pig races anywhere else."
The course had a local flavour to it, with a hill named Cunningham's Gap.
